Gold coins Vienna Philharmonic

Müzenankauf - Goldmünzen Wiener Philharmoniker verkaufen

Investors have many ways to buy gold. With options ranging from gold bars, sovereign mints to bullion and gold coins, the Austrian Gold Coins Vienna Philharmonic is one of the most popular gold coins in the world. In 1989 this gold coin was issued by the Austrian Mint.

To celebrate the art and culture of a nation

In 1989, the Austrian Mint issued the Vienna Philharmonic gold coins for the first time. When it first came out, the Vienna Philharmonic gold coins were only available in 1 ounce gold and 1/4 ounce gold options. Over time, the Austrian Mint added the following options to the collection (first vintage):

  • 1/10 Troy oz (1991)
  • 1/2 Troy oz (1994)
  • 1/25 Troy oz (2014)

The designs of the Austrian gold coin series focus on the Vienna Philharmonic. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the finest orchestras in the world, was officially founded in 1842. However, unofficial orchestral performances date back to the early 1830s in Vienna, the capital of Austria.

Vienna Philharmonic Gold Coins Coin Designs

The Austrian Mint commissioned master engraver Thomas Pesendorfer to design the official gold bullion coin. In 1989, Pesendorfer created a design that reflected the cultural pride Austrians feel for their beloved orchestra. The following details highlight the design of the gold coins Vienna Philharmonic in gold:

  • Obverse: All gold coins Vienna Philharmonic have on the obverse an image of the great organ of the orchestra. Also known as the Golden Concert Hall, this is the venue where the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs in Vienna. On this side of the coin are engravings in German, the native language of Austria and the words “Republic of Austria”, “ounce of gold 9999” and the weight of the coin and the year of issue.
  • Reverse: The reverse of the Vienna Philharmonic gold coins features various musical instruments used by members of the Vienna Philharmonic. This includes two violins on either side and a large cello in the middle. The engravings on this page are also in German.

Like the American Golden Eagle and the Canadian Golden Maple Leaf, the designs of the Vienna Philharmonic gold coins never change. The Austrian Mint has been using these designs since 1989 and each has become so popular that the Austrian Silver Philharmonic (2008) and Austrian Platinum Philharmonic (2016) mints are still in print.

Details of the gold coin Vienna Philharmonic

All coins of the series Austrian Gold Philharmonic have a fineness of .9999 fine gold. First introduced in 1989, the coins were denominated in the Austrian schilling, which was the country’s official currency until 2002. The coins issued from 1989 to 2001 are as follows:

  • 1 ounce: 2,000 shillings
  • 1/2 ounce: 1,000 shillings
  • 1/4 ounce: 500 shillings
  • 1/10 ounce: 200 shillings

The 1/25 oz coin was never issued during the era of the Austrian Schilling. From 2002, the Austrian Mint issues the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin with a face value in euros after the introduction of the single currency of the European Union. The gold coins issued are as follows:

  • 1 ounce: 100 €
  • 1/2 ounce: 50 €
  • 1/4 ounce: 25 €
  • 1/10 ounce: 10 €
  • 1/25 ounce: 4 €

The Vienna Philharmonic gold coin is the first and only gold bar currently in circulation in Europe, denominated in euros and available as current European legal tender.

Variety and availability of gold coins Vienna Philharmonic

Vienna Philharmonic gold coins, like many other gold bullion coins, were minted to satisfy investor demand for gold. For example, the 1990 Vienna Philharmonic gold coin was the best-selling coin in Europe and the second best-selling coin in the world. Other high years are 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2000. In all these years, the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin was the best-selling gold coin in the world.

Below are two limited time gold coins in the design of the Vienna Philharmonic:

The Big Phil: First introduced in 2004, the Big Phil is a Vienna Philharmonic gold coin that was presented to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the coin series. The Big Phil bears its name because it contains 1,000 troy ounces (31,103 kilograms) of 0.9999 pure gold with a face value of €100,000. 15 copies were printed.

Vienna Philharmonic 20 oz Gold Coin: The Austrian Mint downgraded its celebratory nature a bit and launched the 20 oz Vienna Philharmonic gold coins in 2009 to commemorate its 20th anniversary. The coins were minted with 20 troy oz i.e. .9999 fine gold and a face value of €14,000. The Austrian Mint has also minted three separate lots (with year) of 2,009 coins each for the European, American and Japanese markets.

More Austrian gold coins

While Vienna Philharmonic gold coins are the official bullion coins of the modern Republic of Austria, the Austrian Mint has a rich history of circulating and issuing collectible gold coins. In fact, gold coins were minted in the recent past even before the Vienna Philharmonic, but they were not intended as circulation coins. Examples of other Austrian gold coins include the Ducat and the Austrian Schilling gold coins.

Austrian crowns gold coins: Finally, the Austro-Hungarian monarchy has gold coins. The most frequently minted coins of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy from the middle of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century are the crowns gold coins. Gold coins were usually minted as 20 crowns or 40 crowns, whereas 10 and 100 crowns were rarely minted.
